Omo National Park 3-Day Itinerary

Omo National Park is one of the most unique, vast and untouched natural parks in Ethiopia. The park is a major tourist attraction due to its wildlife, ancient archaeological finds and the culture of the Omo Valley tribes.

Omo National Park Brief Description

  • Location: Located in the Southern Regional State of Ethiopia, on the western boarder of the Omo River.
  • Size and Topography: It covers an area of ​​over 4,000 square kilometers, and is covered in vast savannah grasslands, scrub forests and Omo Riverside forests.
  • Wildlife: Elephant, buffalo, wildebeest, lion, leopard, hippopotamus and over 300 species of birds.
  • Archaeological significance: Omo Kibish, located on the banks of the Omo River, is a historical site where the remains of early Homo sapiens were found.

Starting point for visiting the park: Jinka or Arba Minch  3-Day Itinerary/program

Important Note: Omo National Park has limited tourism infrastructure. Good preparation, a professional tour operator and a 4×4 vehicle are essential to implement this plan.

Day 1: Park Entry and Wildlife Viewing

  • Morning drive to the park: Travel from Arba Minch, Jinka or a nearby town to the Omo National Park entrance.
  • Afternoon park entry and camp setup: Complete the park entry process and set up camp at the camp site (or lodge if available) in the park.
  • First walk: Take a short walk/ drive in the afternoon. During this time, watch for animals that come to the Omo River area (such as wildebeest and gazelle).
  • Evening Dinner and relaxation: -Dinner under the supervision of a Park Scout and stargazing in the Omo sky.

Day 2: Omo River, Archaeology and Big animal Hunting

  • Early Morning Walk: -Drive to the vast plains of the park to watch the active predators (such as lions and leopards) hunting at dawn.
  • Morning Omo Kibish Visit: -Drive to the archaeological site of Omo Kibish. The fossils found here indicate the origin of Homo sapiens.
  • Afternoon Omo River border: -Walk to the borders of the Omo River to watch hippos and large crocodiles drinking or resting. The area is also ideal for bird watching.
  • Late Elephant Herds: -Drive to the park’s best area to see the large herds of Omo elephants.
  • Evening Dinner and relaxation: -Overnight at the campsite.

Day 3: Suri Tribe Culture and Trip Summary

  • Morning drive to Suri Tribe Area: Drive to the Suri Tribe settlements near the western exit of the park.
  • Cultural tour: Visit the Suri community; observe their Lip Plate culture and Donga fighting (if applicable).
  • Afternoon drive out of the park: Return to the Suri Tribe Area and reach the park exit.
  • Final drive back to the base: Begin the long drive to Mizan Teferi, Jinka or another destination town.
