Overview of Basketo Zone

Basketo Zone is one of the most fertile and resource-rich areas in the South Ethiopia Regional State. Formerly administered as the “Basketo Special Woreda,” it has recently been elevated to a full Zonal administrative structure. The zone is administratively structured into the Laska City Administration and the Laska Zuria Woreda.

1. Geography and Location

  • Boundaries: Situated in the South Ethiopia Regional State, Basketo borders the Melo Koza and Geze Gofa woredas of the Gofa Zone to the north and east. To the south and west, it shares borders with the North Ari and Salamago woredas of the South Omo Zone.
  • Capital City: The administrative center and capital of the zone is Laska.
  • Topography: Much of the zone features a mountainous, rugged, and undulating terrain, beautifully covered with lush, vibrant green forests.
  • Climate: The climate is predominantly Woyina Dega (temperate) and Dega (cool highlands), making the area humid, verdant, and highly comfortable for both residents and visitors.

2. Economy and Agriculture

Agriculture serves as the absolute backbone of the Basketo Zone economy, driven by naturally rich volcanic soil and a favorable climate.

  • Primary Products:
    • Coffee: Basketo is highly celebrated for producing premium, specialty coffee characterized by three distinct flavor profiles: Mocha, Spicy, and Chocolate.
    • Spices: The zone widely supplies Cardamom and Ginger to the central market. Basket’s Cardamom is exceptionally sought after and commands high demand nationwide.
    • Enset (False Banana): This serves as the primary, deeply rooted food security crop for the local population.
    • Fruits: Avocado, banana, and pineapple are grown in massive abundance across the zone.
  • Handicrafts: The community possesses a rich heritage in artisanal craftsmanship, particularly known for traditional bamboo work, pottery, and blacksmithing/metalwork.

3. People and Culture

  • Ethnicity: The zone is the historical homeland of the Basketo
  • Language: The native language is Basket Nona, which belongs to the Omotic language family. Amharic is also widely spoken as a working language.
  • Traditional Foods and Drinks:
    • Jira: A beloved traditional dish meticulously prepared from Enset derivatives.
    • Zura: A delicious, sweet traditional staple made from a blend of maize, sorghum, and barley.
    • Farsa (Borde): A highly popular, refreshing traditional fermented beverage brewed from a variety of local grains.

4. Tourism Destinations: “The Hidden Natural Pearl”

Basketo is a sanctuary of untouched eco-tourism and vibrant living culture.

Natural Attractions

  • Sirso Waterfall: Located 5 km from Laska in Zaba Kebele, plunging dramatically from a height of over 128 meters.
  • Berso Waterfall: Situated just 400 meters from Sirso. The water leaps 10 meters forward horizontally before free-falling 100 meters, creating a mesmerizing, permanent mist against striking black volcanic rocks.
  • Ocho Waterfall: Located 4 km from Laska, cascading from a height of over 80 meters. Its main drop is preceded by a beautiful, scenic chain of smaller tiered falls.
  • Mizigawa Cave: A historic natural cavern used by the community since ancient times as a strategic shelter to defend against historical invaders, as well as for various societal gatherings.
  • Adita Cave: The largest cave system in the zone, located 5 km from Laska City within Garbaya Kebele (Laska Zuria Woreda).
  • Abune Aregawi Monastery /Soynigawa Cave: Located in the village of Borgela within the Bayo Boreza This site beautifully bridges ancient spiritual history with unique natural cave formations.
  • Tsita Mountain: A majestic peak highly suited for trekking and hiking, offering sweeping panoramic views of the Ergino River and the breathtaking landscapes below.

Cultural and Historical Sites

  • Gotir Gala Natural Protected Forest: A pristine biosphere reserve hosting a dense variety of indigenous plants, wild animals, and diverse bird species.
  • The Kasha System (Sholla-Kasha): A grand, annual thanksgiving festival where members of the Basketo community gather at the end of December at the sacred “Tsosa” (Creator’s) site to offer deep gratitude to the Creator for a peaceful year and a bountiful harvest.
  • Doko Kati Forest and Sacred Site: A sacred communal forest preserved intact through generations to sustain ecological equilibrium and host traditional spiritual ceremonies.
  • Basketo Blended/Temporary Museum: A cultural preservation center dedicated to safeguarding the historical artifacts, master handicrafts, ancient agricultural tools, traditional jewelry, and heritage items of the Basketo people.

5. Infrastructure

  • Roads: Road connectivity to the zone is steadily improving. The primary gateway into the zone is the asphalt highway running directly from Sawla to Laska.
  • Hospitality: While local guest houses are steadily growing in Laska City, there remains a prominent shortage of modern, high-end tourist lodges. This gap presents a highly lucrative investment opportunity for the private hospitality sector.
