Wogida Amba Protected Area
Wegida Amba is a highland conservation forest that showcases Gedeo’s indigenous governance systems. It is vital to the local microclimate and water supply.
Community-led Conservation
- Traditional Protection: The forest is strictly preserved by the community under the rules of the traditional Gada-Baalle system (led by the Abba Gada). Tree cutting is completely forbidden. This makes it a pristine destination for eco-tourism and birdwatching.
2-Day Itinerary
- Day 1 (Arrival): Travel from Addis Ababa to Dilla. Visit the Gedeo Cultural Landscape World Heritage Site Protection Office to secure a guide and plan your visit.
- Day 2 (Forest Exploration): Depart early for Wegida Amba. Walk the protected trails and learn about the indigenous conservation laws. Return to Dilla in the afternoon.
Important Travel Tips
- Guide Required: Because of the sacred nature of the forest, hiring an authorized community guide is mandatory.
- Clothing: Wear comfortable walking clothes. Note: Women are traditionally expected to wear a hair/head covering when entering this sacred area.
- Cultural Taboos: The forest and mountain are considered holy. Follow your guide’s instructions regarding silence, do not touch the trees, and do not leave any trash behind.
