Wanfule Rock/Stone

Wonfule Rock is a spectacular natural wonder located in the Southern Ethiopia Region, Kore Zone, Gorka Woreda, in the Shafule Kebele.

Location and Geography

  • Location: It is located 4.66 km from Jijola town at an elevation of 1,830 meters above sea level.
  • Geography: The site is surrounded by diverse indigenous plants, charming landscapes, and the singing of birds. It features a unique formation where two massive natural rocks stand upright, one balanced on top of the other without any support. The lower rock is up to 7 meters high, while the upper rock stands up to 6 meters tall.

Itinerary (Half-Day Trip)

Morning: Travel to Wonfule

  • 02:30 AM: Depart from Kele, the capital of the Kore Zone, and travel to Jijola town in Gorka Woreda.
  • Hiking: From Jijola, drive for about 4 km along the road towards Burji. Park your vehicle by the roadside and take a short hike to reach the top of the rock formation.

Morning: At Wonfule Rock

  • Closely observe the amazing balance of the two massive rocks.
  • Take memorable photos using the rocks as a backdrop.
  • Talk to local guides to learn about the history and legends associated with the rocks.

Afternoon: Return

  • 07:00 PM: Have lunch in the shade of nearby trees.
  • 08:30 PM: Return to Kele city. On the way back, you can view the famous Kore white teff farms.
