Trip preparation and execution

  1. Hire a guide: – Hire a local guide who knows the exact district and special place where Sika Falls is located by contacting the Dilla Zone Culture and Tourism Office. Never travel without a local guide. The road is complex and passes through private lands (coffee plantations).
  2. Transportation: – Travel from Dilla to the nearest rural kebele by 4WD. 4WD is essential as the road can be difficult.
  3. Hiking: – From the parking lot, hike through the coffee forest and steep slopes. The hike is challenging so bring good hiking boots and plenty of water.
  4. Visiting the waterfall: – After reaching the waterfall, you can explore the area, admire the clarity of the water and the beauty of the coffee forest. See the traditional Gedeon green houses and coffee plantations in the area.
  5. Return to the center: – Return to Dilla town or Yirgachefe for the night. It is recommended to finish the tour before noon; it is difficult to travel in the dark in mountainous areas.

Tips

  • Culture: The Gedeo are a very hospitable and cultured people. When you pass by their coffee plantations, you should politely ask for and say hello to the farm owners.
  • Travel time: As with all Gedeo attractions, it is best to visit during the dry season, from October to May.
  • Food and water: There are no shops or restaurants near the waterfall, so bring food, water, and snacks.
