- Geographical significance
- Location: Rakko Mountain is located in the Gedeo Zone, and is a central point from which to view the landscape of the many coffee and tea plantations in the area, starting from the city of Dilla.
- View: When you reach the summit, you can see a magnificent view of the entire Gedeo Zone, which looks like a green carpet. This view clearly shows the Multi-storey Agroforestry System, which is a World Heritage Site.
- Climate: The Mountain is high in elevation, so the climate is mild and cool. It is a perfect place for hiking and nature lovers.
- Cultural and Spiritual Role
- Sacred Site: Mount Rako has great spiritual significance for the Gedeo community. According to the rules of the “Geda-Bale” system, this mountain is used for prayer, meditation and traditional ceremonies.
- Rain Prayer: Especially during the dry season, prayers for rain are held and social decisions are made.
- Biodiversity Conservation: The forests around the mountain are strictly protected by traditional laws, and serve as a habitat for a variety of wild animals and birds.
Mount Rako Itinerary (Full Day Hike)
Climbing Mount Rako is a physically demanding hike. We will focus on the itinerary starting from the town of Dilla.
Day 1: Preparation and Accommodation
- Afternoon: Arrive in Dilla City or Yirgachefe and rest.
- Evening:
- Find a Guide: Hire a local guide who knows the route and explains the cultural role of the mountain (this is essential for safety and cultural awareness).
- Preparation: Prepare water, packed lunch, and snacks for the next day’s hike.
Day 2: Hike Day
- Early morning (12:00): Wake up, have a light breakfast, and check out of the hotel.
- Morning (1:00): Drive to the village at the foot of the mountain.
- Morning (2:00): Start hiking. The route first passes through coffee plantations and Gedeo villages, then enters the steep mountainside.
- Hiking time: Depending on your fitness level, it can take 3 to 5 hours.
- After Noon (7:00 – 8:00): Reach the summit.
- Enjoy the breathtaking panoramic view.
- Take photos of the area.
- Have lunch and take a short break. (Please remember to bring your trash back with you).
- Afternoon (9:00): Start descending. The descent usually takes 2-3 hours.
- Evening: Return to Dilla or Yirgachefe for rest and relaxation.
Day 3: Rest and return
- Morning: Rest and return to Addis Ababa.
Important tips for the trek
- Physical fitness: Good physical fitness is required as the trek requires altitude. A slow and steady pace is recommended.
- Equipment:
Footwear: Hiking boots with good grip.
Clothing: Light jacket and hat for the colder peaks.
Water: Carry plenty of water and snacks.
- Cultural Respect: Since the mountain is sacred, strictly follow the rules of silence and order that your guide will give you.
- Transportation: A sturdy vehicle (4WD) may be required to reach the base of the mountain.
