Gughe Mountains

Mount Gughe is one of the most stunning and tallest mountains in the South Ethiopia Regional State. Located in the Gamo highlands, this majestic mountain is widely known for its natural beauty and deep cultural values.

  • Location: Located northwest of Arba Minch in the Daramalo Woreda of the Gamo Zone. The main and standard route passes through the Chencha district.
  • Elevation: Mount Gughe reaches up to 4,207 meters above sea level, making it the highest point in Southern Ethiopia.

  • Climate: Due to its high altitude, it has a cold highland climate, often covered in clouds and fog.
  • Ecology: The area has highland vegetation, including special grasses, shrubs, and rare plants.

Mount Gughe holds great significance for the Gamo people:

  • Cultural Preservation: The area is protected by strong cultural values. “Sacred forests,” untouched by human hands for centuries, are found at the base and top of the mountain.
  • Agriculture: At the hilly base of the mountain, the Gamo people practice stunning terracing and cultivate the Enset plant. The traditional soil conservation method used by the local community is globally recognized for its sustainability.

Travel Itinerary

A minimum of two days is recommended to successfully summit the mountain and fully enjoy its natural beauty.

Day 1: From Arba Minch to Dorze/Chencha

  • Morning: Depart from Arba Minch for Chencha.
  • Afternoon: Spend the afternoon in the Dorze villages. This is important for acclimatizing to the mountain air.
  • Night: Stay at a Dorze lodge or other accommodation, enjoying traditional food.

Day 2: Hike to the Summit of Mount Gughe

  • Morning (6:00 AM – 8:00 AM): Depart from Chencha to the base of the mountain by vehicle.
  • Late Morning (8:00 AM – 12:00 PM): Start the hike. The path is uphill and requires patience and a steady pace.
  • Noon (12:00 PM – 1:30 PM): Reach the summit! Admire the scenery, take photos, and eat your packed lunch.
  • Afternoon (2:00 PM – 4:30 PM): Begin descending to the mountain base.
  • Evening: Conclude the trip and return to Arba Minch, or stay an extra night in Chencha if desired.

Preparations for the Trip

  • Clothing: The mountain summit is extremely cold; wearing a warm jacket, a wool hat, gloves, and thick socks is mandatory.
  • Shoes: Sturdy, non-slip hiking boots suitable for rocky terrain are necessary.
  • Food and Water: Since there are no service facilities on the mountain, carry sufficient drinking water and energy-giving food (like chocolate, biscuits, or roasted grain).
  • Guide: Hiring a local guide who knows the route is essential for safety and for gaining insight into the area’s culture and history.
  • Expert Advice: The best time to visit Mount Gughe is during the dry season from October to February. During these months, there is less cloud and fog, allowing for a clear and spectacular view of the surrounding lakes and mountain ranges.
