Mount Dello

Delo Mountain, located in the Kore Zone, is one of the highest peaks in Southern Ethiopia. Rich in biodiversity, this mountain is a spectacular destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers.

  • Location: Delo Mountain is situated in the Southern Ethiopia Regional State, Kore Zone, Gorka Woreda, in the Itate Kebele. It is located 22 km from the Zonal capital, Kele.
  • Geography: With an elevation of 3,600 meters above sea level, it is the highest peak in the Kore Zone and the second-highest in the Southern Ethiopia region. The base is covered in dense mountain forest, which transitions into Afro-Alpine vegetation and rocky peaks as you ascend.

Day 1: Travel to Kore Zone

  • Travel to the Kore Zone via Hawassa-Dilla or Arba Minch-Konso.
  • En route, enjoy the beautiful farmlands of the Gardula area, the Konso highland villages, and the charming landscapes of the Burji Zone.
  • Arrive in Kele city to rest at local facilities, obtain necessary permits, and explore the city’s atmosphere.

Day 2: Expedition to Delo Mountain

  • Start the journey from Kele, passing through Kore ethnic villages and coffee plantations at the foot of the mountain.
  • Visit traditional houses, observe local lifestyles, and take photos of the landscape.
  • Have lunch on the trail, listen to local history from elders, and spend the night camping on the mountain.
  • Early in the morning (around 11:00 AM), start the trek to the summit to witness the spectacular sunrise over the lakes. Continue the journey to visit Gayo Waterfall before returning to Kele.

  • Permits and Guides: It is mandatory to obtain a permit from the Kele Tourism Office and hire a local guide before starting the trip.
  • Camping Gear: Since there are no hotels in the area, bringing camping equipment (tent, sleeping bag) is essential.
  • Food and Water: As there are no shops on-site, bring enough water and energy-boosting food (nuts, honey, and bread) for two days.
