Maze National Park

Maze National Park is located between the Gamo and Gofa zones and is known for its natural beauty and rare wildlife. Established in 2005 (E.C.), the park derives its name from the Maze River that traverses it.

  • Location: 180 km from Arba Minch city and 460 km from Addis Ababa.
  • Size: Covers 202 square kilometers, with a landscape consisting of lowland savanna grasslands and riverine forests.
  1. Habitat of the Swaynes’s Hartebeest

The primary reason for the park’s international recognition is that it serves as a habitat for the rare and endangered Swayne’s Hartebeest. The park is an ideal location to observe these animals at a close range.

  • Mammals: Over 39 species of large and medium mammals (such as lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, kudus, waterbucks, and warthogs) are found here.
  • Birds: With 196 recorded bird species, it is an attractive destination for birdwatchers.
  • Plants: Over 80 identified plant species are present.
  1. Landscape and Ecology
  • Elevation: Located at an altitude ranging from 1,000 to 1,200 meters above sea level.
  • Ecological Zones: The Park’s landscape is divided into four: savanna grassland, shrublands, riverine forests, and woodlands with broad-leaved trees.

Useful Information for Visitors

  • Preferred Travel Season: Visiting during the dry months from October to May is recommended. During this time, internal roads are accessible, and animals gather near water sources, making them easier to spot.
  • Necessary Preparation: As the park has a hot climate, it is appropriate to carry light clothing, sun protection, and photography equipment.

Travel Itinerary

As the trip to Maze National Park requires time, a minimum of two days is needed to fully enjoy the natural attractions.

Day 1: From Arba Minch to Maze National Park

  • Morning (7:00 AM – 11:00 AM): Depart from Arba Minch via the Chencha route. Admire the stunning mountainous landscapes of Gamo along the way.
  • Late Morning (11:00 AM – 12:00 PM): Lunch break in Wacha town.
  • Afternoon (1:30 PM – 2:30 PM): Arrive at the park entrance to complete entry permits and scout (guide) arrangements.
  • Evening (3:00 PM – 6:00 PM): Afternoon wildlife viewing. This time is ideal for spotting the rare Swayne’s Hartebeest.
  • Night: Overnight camping in the designated area within the park.

Day 2: Morning Viewing and Return Trip

  • Morning (6:00 AM – 9:00 AM): Morning safari. Animals are active at this time, making them easier to observe. Also, visit the “Bilbo” hot springs located within the park.
  • Late Morning (12:00 PM): Conclude the visit and begin the return trip to Arba Minch.
  • Night: Arrive back in Arba Minch.
