This is one of the largest and oldest crocodile farms in Ethiopia and Africa. Established in 1971, its main goal is to combine wildlife conservation with economic sustainability.

  • Location: Located on the outskirts of Arba Minch city, near NechSar National Park, between Lake Abaya and Lake Chamo.
  • Size: Covers 8.075 hectares and contains several ponds where crocodiles are kept according to their age and growth stage.
  1. Breeding Process

The center uses modern and scientific methods for crocodile breeding:

  • Egg Collection: Every year, the ranch’s experts collect crocodile eggs from the shores of Lakes Chamo and Abaya to save them from being eaten by natural predators.
  • Hatching Process: The collected eggs are kept in a modern incubator with optimal temperature until they hatch.
  • Growth Stages: After hatching, they are separated into different ponds according to their age to ensure their growth and safety.

  • Leather Production: Providing high-quality crocodile leather for the international market to produce high-end shoes, bags, and belts.
  • Conservation: To maintain natural ecological balance, a portion of the hatched crocodiles is released back into their natural habitat.
  • Tourism Attraction: The center is open to both domestic and foreign tourists. Visitors can see hundreds of crocodiles at different stages, from small hatchlings to giants, at close range.
  1. Visitor Experience
  • Feeding Time: Watching the crocodiles eat meat is an exciting scene. They usually feed once or twice a week.
  • Giant Crocodiles: There is a separate pond for age-old, giant crocodiles kept specifically for breeding.
  • Small Museum: The center has a small information room containing skeletons and information explaining crocodile biology and the history of the center.

Travel Itinerary

As this visit requires little time, it can easily be combined with other attractions nearby.

  • Morning (9:00 AM – 9:30 AM): Depart from Arba Minch and reach the center’s entrance.
  • Late Morning (9:30 AM – 11:30 AM): Visit the crocodile ponds to see the newly hatched small crocodiles. Observe hundreds of medium and giant crocodiles sunbathing. If your visit coincides with feeding days (usually Wednesday or Saturday), you will see the amazing scene as they feed.
  • Noon (11:30 AM – 12:00 PM): After viewing the various crocodile leather products, conclude your tour and return to the city.

Quick Travel Tips

  • Preferred Time: The best time to visit is in the morning, at noon, or in the afternoon; at these times, the crocodiles come out of the water to sunbathe, making them easy to see.
  • Safety: While tourist safety is well-protected, it is mandatory to always follow the experts’ instructions and not lean on protective fences.
  • Photography: This is the best place to take close-up photos of wildlife, so don’t forget to have your camera ready!
