Basura Grave Site

Basura Grave Site

Located in Basura Kebele, Bule Woreda, this ancient cemetery is a mysterious and highly respected archaeological site within the UNESCO Cultural Landscape.

Unique Features

  • The Cemetery: An ancient burial ground for historic Gedeo leaders, heroes, or prominent clans (such as the Derasho). The stelae are erected on and around ancient burial mounds.
  • Intact Forest: Spanning 2 hectares, the cemetery is covered by a strictly protected indigenous forest where tree cutting is entirely taboo.
  • Scientific Value: Because the forest has remained untouched, it serves as a crucial research site for botanists and houses rare, endangered plant species.
