Worera Cave

Worera Cave is one of the natural attractions in the Gedeo Zone, formed in the unique volcanic landscape of the zone. Although this cave is suitable for sightseeing, it is not as widely known as the stone monuments, so the support of local guides is essential.

  • Location: Worera Cave is located in the Gedeo Zone, Southern Ethiopia. It is located in the Gedeo Mountain and Agroforestry areas.
  • Reason for Formation: Since the Gedeo Zone is generally a volcanic landscape, the cave may have been formed by the fracture of solid rock layers or by lava tubes.
  • Special Feature: The cave served as a shelter or water source for the local population to some extent. Entering the cave allows you to understand the origin of the rocks and landforms in the area.
  • Location: The cave is surrounded by lush greenery, and is a haven for local birds and small wildlife.

Departure City: Dilla

Day 1

  • Arrival and Cave Tour: – Travel from Addis Ababa to Dilla. Hire a guide to the Worera Cave area. Cave Tour: Enter the cave using a torch or battery and view the rock formations.
  • Afternoon: After the cave, visit the nearby Tuto Fela Tkel Stone.

Day 2

  • Heritage, Coffee and Return: – Morning: Travel to the largest collection of stone sculptures in Africa, the Tchelba Tutiti Tkel Stone.
  • Afternoon: Head to Yirgachefe Coffee Farm and participate in the coffee roasting ceremony. Then return to the starting city.

III. Important Tips for Visiting

  1. A Guide is Essential: The Wrera Cave may not be as clearly marked as larger national parks. It is essential to hire a guide who knows the area well to find the right spot and to ensure your safety.
  2. Equipment: It is dark inside the cave, so you should bring a strong flashlight or battery.
  3. Clothing: As the ground inside the cave can be slippery, it is recommended to wear non-slip shoes and bring a light jacket for the cold of the cave.
  4. Caution: Care should be taken not to damage the natural structure of the cave or disturb the local ecosystem.
