Abune Aregawi Monastery / Soynigawa Cave

The Abune Aregawi Monastery, also known as “Soini Gawa” or “Dawa Gawa Cave,” is a destination of immense spiritual and historical significance located in Bayo Borza Boregela Kebele, Laska Zuria Woreda, in the Basketo Zone.

  • Etymology: In the Basketo language, “Dawa Gawa” translates to “Cave of the Dragon.” According to local legend, a large dragon was believed to have lived inside the cave in ancient times.
  • Structure: The interior of the cave is dry and protected from rain and sun. It features three main entrances, the primary one being wide enough for people to walk through comfortably. The full length of the cave remains unexplored and unconfirmed.
  • Spiritual Significance: Since 2006 E.C., holy water (Tebel) has been discovered in the cave. Consequently, the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church has taken custody of the site, providing spiritual services and care.

  • Morning (09:30 – 12:30): Visit the monastery, participate in spiritual services at the holy water site, and observe the architecture of the Dawa Gawa Cave.
  • Early Afternoon (12:30 – 14:00): Combine the visit with the nearby Ocho Waterfall and spend time enjoying the natural surroundings.
  • Late Afternoon (14:00 – 15:30): Return to Laska town to conclude the trip.
