Goza Dubusha is one of the most ancient and famous public gathering squares (Dubushas) in the Gamo Zone. In the traditional Gamo administrative system, “Dubusha” is not just a physical space, but a center of democracy, justice, peace, and social interaction.

In Gamo culture, Dubusha is a place for justice and upholding the law:

  • Symbol of Peace: Lying, inciting conflict, or carrying weapons within the Dubusha is strictly prohibited by culture.

The square is the main stage for regional and community festivals:

  • Meskel Festival (Yo Mesqala): When Gamo’s great festival is celebrated, major traditional dances and blessing ceremonies are held at Goza Dubusha.
  • Graduation Ceremony: A place where traditional leaders are appointed and formally take over their responsibilities.
  • Reconciliation Ceremonies: Disputes between individuals or tribes are settled here through the “Duma,” the highest reconciliation process.

  • Open Discussion Forum: Dubusha is an open square free from any walls or restrictions. This layout has high symbolic meaning, expressing “transparency,” “clear accountability,” and “equality for all members.”

Travel Itinerary (One-day trip from Arba Minch)

  • Morning (08:30 – 10:30): Travel from Arba Minch to Chencha (you can observe the Dorze village along the way).
  • Late Morning (10:30 – 12:30): Visit Goza Dubusha; relax under the shade of the trees and learn about the Gamo traditional leadership system.
  • Noon (12:30 – 14:00): Eat lunch in Chencha town (if it is the season, taste the famous Chencha apples).
  • Evening (14:00 – 16:30): Observe the local weaving art and return to Arba Minch.

  • Dress Code: Since Chencha and Goza Dubusha are at high altitudes, the weather is cold. Carrying a jacket, hat, and warm clothing is necessary.

  • Transport: Although the road is asphalt, it is very steep; using a capable vehicle is recommended.
  • Best Time to Visit: If you visit at the end of September during the Meskel festival, you will have the chance to personally witness the Gamo people’s “Yo Mesqala” festival.
