NechSar National Park is one of Ethiopia’s most attractive national parks. It is famous for its rich natural resources, diverse wildlife, and breathtaking landscape.

  • Location: Located in the South Ethiopia Regional State, near Arba Minch city, 507 km south of Addis Ababa.
  • Size: 514 square kilometers, with 15% covered by water bodies (lakes).
  1. Origin of the Name

The name “NechSar” (White Grass) originates from the type of grass that grows in the park, which appears white when viewed from a distance. This vast grassland is widely known as the “NechSar Plains.”

  1. Stunning Geographical Features

The park is situated in a spectacular location between two major lakes in the Great Rift Valley:

  • Lake Abaya: Located to the north, characterized by its red/brown water.
  • Lake Chamo: Located to the south, known for its attractive blue/green water.
  • Bridge of God (Igzer Dildiy): The mountainous land strip that separates the two lakes and connects the park to Arba Minch city.
  • The Forty Springs (Arba Minch): Over 40 pure underground water springs emerging from the forest near Arba Minch city, adding unique beauty to the park.
  1. Wildlife

The park is home to many indigenous and rare species:

  • Wildlife: Common sightings include Burchell’s zebra, Grant’s gazelle, and the rare Swayne’s Hartebeest.
  • Crocodile Market: Located on the shores of Lake Chamo, a world-famous spot where thousands of giant crocodiles sunbathe. The term “market” refers to the density of the crocodiles, not trade.
  • Other Species: Hippos, various monkey species (like Colobus monkeys), and over 340 resident and migratory bird species.
  1. Travel Itinerary

The best time to visit is during the dry months from October to March. This one-day trip includes two main safaris—one by water and one by land.

  • Morning (8:30 AM – 11:30 AM) | Lake Chamo Boat Trip: Head to the famous “Crocodile Market” to see giant Nile crocodiles, pods of hippos, and various water birds (such as pelicans) at close range.
  • Expert Advice: 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM is the best time for the boat trip when the lake is calm and crocodiles come out to sunbathe.
  • Late Morning (11:30 AM – 1:00 PM) Forest and Spring Tour: Walk through the dense groundwater forest to visit the natural “Forty Springs,” ancient giant trees, and Colobus monkeys.
  • Lunch break (1:00 PM – 2:30 PM): Relax and enjoy fresh local fish dishes at hotels in Arba Minch or near the park entrance.
  • Afternoon (2:30 PM – 5:30 PM) Land Safari: Drive across the “Bridge of God” to the vast NechSar plains to see thousands of zebras and other animals. Also, take photos at the stunning viewpoint overlooking both Lake Abaya and Lake Chamo.

Prerequisites for the Trip

  • Transport: A 4WD vehicle is mandatory to travel through the park. A reliable boat must be rented from legal associations for the lake tour.
  • Clothing: As the weather is hot, wearing light clothing, a hat, and sunglasses is recommended.
  • Permit and Guide: It is mandatory to pay the legal entrance fee at the park office and be accompanied by a park scout or guide.
