Maze National Park
Maze National Park, located in the Gamo Zone, is a magnificent park renowned for its natural beauty and rare wildlife species. Established in 2003 E.C. (2005 G.C.), the park is named after the Maze River, which flows directly through its center.
Below are the key highlights you should know about the park:
1. Location and Area
- Location: It is situated approximately 180 kilometers northwest of Arba Minch, the capital of the Gamo Zone.
- Size: Covering about 202 square kilometers, its landscape is dominated by lowland savannah grasslands and riverine forests.
2. Sanctuary for Swayne’s Hartebeest
The primary reason Maze National Park is recognized internationally is:
- It serves as a vital habitat for Swayne’s Hartebeest, an endangered species found only in Ethiopia.
- Currently, Maze is considered the premier location to observe this rare animal in large numbers and at close range.
3. Wildlife and Birds
In addition to the Swayne’s Hartebeest, the park is home to many other wonderful species:
- Mammals: Greater Kudu, Oryx, Bushbuck, Ostrich, Gazelle, Serval Cat, Hyena, and occasionally Leopards.
- Birds: With over 130 bird species recorded, the park is a paradise for bird watchers.
4. Unique Geographical Beauty
- The Maze River: Beyond being a critical water source for the wildlife, the river is lined with tall trees that provide a lush, green contrast to the surrounding plains.
- Open Plains: Because the park features wide-open grasslands, visitors can easily spot animals with the naked eye rather than needing powerful binoculars.
Useful Information for Visitors
- When to visit? It is best to visit during the dry season (October to May). During this time, the roads are more accessible, and animals frequently gather around the water sources.
- What to bring? Since the climate is lowland and tropical, remember to bring lightweight clothing, sunscreen, and a camera to capture the scenery.
In summary: Maze National Park is a true gift of nature—a place of natural peace, free from significant human interference, offering a rare opportunity to see Ethiopia’s unique wildlife up close.
