Lake Turkana

Lake Turkana

Lake Turkana is a breathtaking, expansive body of water located in the Great Rift Valley. It holds the title of the world’s largest permanent desert lake and is shared between Ethiopia and Kenya.

Key Characteristics

  • Location: In the South Omo Zone, accessed via Omorate town in the Dassanech District, right near the Ethio-Kenyan border.

  • Water Source: The Omo River is the lifeblood of the lake, contributing over 90% of its total water influx.
  • Endorheic Basin: The Lake has no outlet; water loss occurs solely through evaporation, resulting in a moderate concentration of salt and soda (an alkaline lake).

Global and Biological Value
