Dishta-Gina Festival

Dishta-Gina is the most important cultural festival of the Ari people. It is a celebration of harvest, reconciliation, and cultural identity.

Festival Highlights

  • Significance: Far more than just a dance, Dishta-Gina is the Ari New Year. It marks the end of the harvest and is a time for community blessings, resolving disputes, and family feasts.
  • The Dance: The signature Dishta-Gina dance involves participants joining hands or locking shoulders in a large circle, moving rhythmically forward and backward. It symbolizes community unity and strength.
  • Attire: Men and women dress in beautiful, colorful, hand-woven traditional Ari clothing.

Traditional Festive Foods

  • Drinks: Large batches of Ari Araqe (a strong local spirit) and Tella (traditional beer) are prepared.
  • Dishes: Feasts feature taro (a local staple crop) prepared in various styles, alongside seasoned beef and mutton.

International Recognition

The festival’s name and rhythm gained widespread fame across Ethiopia and internationally after the Ari artist Tariku Gankisi released his hit song “Dishta Gina”, which blended traditional Ari rhythms with modern sounds. This has significantly boosted cultural tourism to the region.

3-Day Dishta-Gina Festival Itinerary

Note: The exact dates vary by district as they align with local harvests, but the festival typically peaks between mid-November and early December. Consult the Jinka Tourism Bureau ahead of time to plan.

Day 1: Jinka Arrival & Prep

  • Morning: Fly from Addis Ababa to Jinka.
  • Late Morning: Check into your hotel and visit the South Omo Museum to understand the cultural background of the festival.
  • Afternoon: Browse Jinka’s local shops to purchase traditional hand-embroidered Ari clothing or accessories to wear to the festival.
  • Evening: Overnight in Jinka.

Day 2: Festival Celebration Day

  • 8:00 AM: Drive from Jinka to the designated rural district where the main public celebrations are taking place (e.g., South Ari).
  • 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM: Observe the official opening ceremonies, where clan elders bless the new harvest and perform reconciliation rituals.
  • 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM: Join the circle! Participate in the rhythmic Dishta-Gina dance, sample traditional taro dishes, and enjoy the festive atmosphere.
  • Evening: Return to Jinka for the night.

Day 3: Local Market & Return

  • Morning: Visit the bustling Jinka market to purchase unique local handicrafts and souvenirs.
