Ajora Waterfalls
Ajora Waterfalls is one of the most beautiful and spectacular natural attractions in southern Ethiopia. This waterfall is especially known as the “Twin Waterfalls”, and attracts many visitors due to its magnificence and the wonderful natural forest surrounding it.
Here is a detailed description of Ajora Waterfalls:
- Location
- Area: The waterfall is located mainly in Wolaita Zone, Boloso Bombe Woreda.
- Distance: It is approximately 68 kilometers from the zone’s capital, Wolaita Sodo, and 458 kilometers from Addis Ababa (on the Shashemene-Sodo route). The waterfall is also close to the famous city of Areka.
- The unique feature of the waterfall (twin waterfall)
What makes the Ajora waterfall unique is that two different rivers converge (1.65 km apart) and descend into a deep gorge.
- The first waterfall (Ajancho): This waterfall is 210 meters long (slope), and the width of the water is approximately 2.5 meters. It is one of the longest waterfalls in Ethiopia.
- The second waterfall (Sokei): This one is also 170 meters long and 1 meter wide.
After descending from a huge gorge, both waterfalls meet at a place called “Bukula” and continue their journey to the Omo Valley.
- Meaning and history of the name
- “Ajora” means “Deep” in the Wolayta language. The name is derived from the deep gorge and valley that the waterfall creates.
- Local Natural Resources
- Biodiversity: The canyon where the waterfall falls is surrounded by a dense forest cover. Therefore, it serves as a home for various wild animals and birds.
- Climate: The place has clean air, attractive green scenery and untouched natural beauty.
- Tourism Experience (To Visit)
- Ajora Waterfall is especially popular for hiking and nature adventure lovers.
- To see the full glory of the waterfall and see its beauty up close, it requires descending to the bottom of the gorge through a steep and forested path. Although this journey is a bit tiring, the natural sounds and the spray of water when you reach the bottom make you forget all the fatigue.
- Useful tips for the trip
- Visiting season: The waterfall is at its largest and most crowded during the winter months (June to September); however, the road can be muddy and difficult to reach. Therefore, the months from late September to December are the best to see the full beauty of the waterfall and avoid any difficulties on the road.
- Guide: Since the place is steep, do not forget to take a local guide (from the district culture and tourism office) to avoid getting lost and to get historical explanations.
- Clothing: Wear comfortable hiking shoes for climbing and descending the hill. Since there is a lot of water around the waterfall, it is useful to carry a jacket or raincoat.
