The Songo Council of Elders
The Songo is the supreme traditional judicial and administrative council of the Gedeo people. It is responsible for conflict resolution, heritage preservation, and natural resource management. This system has preserved the Gedeo Cultural Landscape for over 500 years.
The Songo and the “Sira” (Customary Law)
- Role: The Songo consists of respected community elders chosen for their wisdom. They settle complex land disputes, family issues, and communal disagreements through peaceful consensus.
- Enforcing the Sira: The Songo enforces Gedeo customary law (Sira), which mandates the preservation of forests, stelae sites, and coffee-enset farms.
- Etiquette: When meeting with the Songo elders, it is customary to present small traditional gifts like coffee, tobacco, or local agricultural products as a sign of respect.
3-Day Cultural Itinerary
(Note: Witnessing a council session requires a local guide and strict traditional permission.)
- Day 1: Arrive in Dilla from Addis Ababa. Hire a local guide with strong community ties and receive a briefing on local etiquette.
- Day 2: Visit a traditional village in the morning to see how the Songo system functions in daily life. In the afternoon, meet with a Songo representative to discuss the Sira customary law and traditional conflict resolution. Overnight in Dilla.
- Day 3: Visit a stelae site preserved by the Songo elders, walk through the coffee-enset farms, and return to Addis Ababa.
